This song combines the main character’s (Allison’s) child, teen, and adult personas to create a reflection on her life and the ways she’s grown but also stayed the same. This musical follows the life story of a girl who realizes in college that she’s gay, and shows her life of emotional abuse, difficult relations with her father, discoveries in sexual orientation, and dysfunctional family.Below, I will describe some of my favorite musical theater songs, and why they’re so powerful to me. Harmonies add expression, but mostly add an aesthetically pleasing component to the song. The way musical phrases crescendo (grow) and decrescendo (decline) and the way they become suddenly soft or loud carries a story in the music. In my opinion, the dynamics are the part of a song that creates the most expression. It can create suspense, begin a celebration, and mourn a loss. Through the use of specific chords, it can instill fear or sadness in its listeners. Music grows as the story it’s telling climaxes. There’s so much that goes into a composition: dynamics, harmonies, phrasings, etc. As someone who’s been surrounded by music her whole life, I can appreciate all that goes into a piece of music, and how that piece can move you. Music is my favorite, and the most beautiful type of art (in my opinion of course). There’s nothing like a masterfully written song to make you feel all types of ways.
